A Guide to Summer Opportunities

The summer between the 1st and 2nd years of Medical School is a unique time. Students in any given class will be involved in a dizzying array of activities over the summer: some will choose to take the summer off to relax and spend time with family and friends, some will be involved in basic science research, some will travel to far away places, some will shadow physicians in their area of clinical interest, and some will do things completely unrelated to medicine. The trick is to find something enjoyable that will provide a break from the demands of the preclinical years and will also satisfy your intellectual and/or career interests.

We've provided a set of links to some popular options, but know that there are many, many other opportunities out there that you can find. In addition, most DMS faculty are responsive to student inquiries and helpful to those looking for summer opportunities. At any given time, there are hundreds of research projects in which our faculty are involved. Students are encouraged to contact specific DHMC departments about setting up research or clinical projects. The student affairs office is also a helpful resource for pointing you in the right direction. Best of luck!
