Libraries One of the challenges of the first few weeks of medical school is finding a place to study that fits your personality and needs. Dana Library may become your "home away from home." It's right next to DMS, so it's close and convenient. However, you have access to the complete Dartmouth library system throughout the year, and many medical students find it a welcome change to study in some of the other libraries on campus. All Dartmouth libraries are open to all Dartmouth students, though there may be some restrictions on some electronic resources or services. Your student ID will serve as your library card. Be sure to check return dates, though, because fines can be very steep (especially on reserve materials). Renewals can be made in person or by calling the library number. Dana Library (650-1658) Dana's resources include a complete selection of medical and science journals and texts far and beyond any course requirement. What you canÕt find at Dana, you will most likely find at the Matthews-Fuller Health Sciences Library in the hospital (i.e., most of the new journals are sent to DHMC). Hours:
Reserve Books: Most course textbooks and readings are on 2-hour reserve and can be checked out with your ID. You can also get copies of old exams here. Be sure to take a look at these. Professors are known to stick to the same format and to repeat many of the same questions. Learning Resource Center: Many interactive software and other programs area available on the computers (Mac and PC) and AV equipment on the third floor of Dana. Some programs are required by courses, others will be recommended. These computers are also available for blitzmail, internet access, etc.. Free laser printing is available as well. Ethernet ports to the Dartmouth network are available for laptops throughout the library. Information Services The library staff is very accommodating and will help you locate information and literature you need for research projects and presentations. The library uses the OVID system to access medline and other databases. Excellent help and instruction are available at the reference desk on the first floor. Copy machines youÕll find on the first 2 floors of Dana The machines only take ÒALLcardÓ copycards, so youÕll need to buy one from the first floor ($0.50). The price per copy is 5 cents. There are also a copy machines in the student lounge. Matthews-Fuller Health Sciences Library at DHMC (650-7658) This has become a popular spot for both first and second years to study. You could live at the hospital--it has food in all shapes and sizes, beds, a bank--even a hair salon. The library has somewhat restrictive hours but the carousels are spacious, seats are comfortable, conference rooms are available, and there is a large selection of medical literature. Feldberg Library (646-2191) Feldberg is associated with the Tuck School of Business and the Thayer School of Engineering. It's located at the end of Tuck Mall. Comfy, colorful seats. Studying here is a great way to meet other (non-medical) grad students. Note that while the library is available for med student use, there is a restriction on the non-library study spaces in the Murdough Center and Byrne Hall, which are reserved for use by Tuck & Thayer students. Baker Library (646-2560) It's a beautiful building with tons of study-rooms to explore:
Hours:
This huge addition to Baker library is currently under construction and is slated to open in September of 2000. More info will be available then. Kresge Library (646-3563) Kresge is the undergraduate science library...you'll rarely see medical students rubbing elbows with the premeds stressing over organic chemistry here, though. A few tables outside the library are available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Very comfortable but quiet studying (i.e., no talking or socializing here). Sanborn Library (646-2312) The English library is adjacent to Baker Library. The 4 p.m. teatime and poetry reading can be a novel break from work. Sherman Art Library (646-2305) Located next to Baker. |
