Employment

Most people don't work during the first year of medical school, since there usually isn't enough time, however, the following resources may be helpful for your partner.

Although the Medical School has no formal or informal job resources, it occasionally gets listings on positions either in the school or in one of the local stores. Stay in touch with Nanci Cirone and Susan Lynaugh.

Personnel offices: The one for the medical center is housed on the fourth floor of the Dartmouth- Hitchcock Hospital. The College's personnel offices are in Clement Hall (behind and to the left of the Hopkins Center). Stop by as soon as you arrive. Bring your resume and any letters of recommendation, make an appointment with one of the job counselors and give him/her your best sales pitch. Don't be too specific about the position you want, but do be specific about your skills. Everything from typing to vegetarian cooking can be used here. The College office publishes a weekly listing of openings --it comes out Monday mornings; and can also be accessed via computer. You can sign on to the computer by using your medical student ID number and birthdate. Be prepared to take typing and clerical tests. One word of advice: keep trying! Although the Personnel Office will tell you not to, it is possible to send your resume directly to departments on campus, especially the library. This may help you to get an interview you otherwise might have missed. Address them to the head of the department or director of personnel (Library).

One of the best resources available is the Career and Employment Services Office. It is located on the third floor of the Collis Center. This office is primarily for the use of undergraduates looking for leave term jobs, and graduating seniors in search of permanent jobs. However, it can prove very useful for medical students and their spouses. Ask one of the student interns to show you where the "local leave-term and odd-job" notebooks are. Occasionally there are some real finds--everything from baby-sitting to cartography jobs. Ask the intern to explain how to use the computerized "Dart-job" listing.

There are several stores in Hanover that hire in the fall and intermittently throughout the year. The Coop, a few Hanover restaurants, and the Dartmouth Bookstore are the best bets. Some drawbacks: you have to work Saturdays and school vacations, and the pay is strictly minimum wage.

The classifieds in the Valley News may be helpful although be prepared not to hear from some of the places to which you apply.

Some students work part-time at the hospital doing phlebotomy (drawing blood). These positions are filled by lottery in the Spring Term. (There are also other part-time jobs available at the hospital, such as EKG technician. See the Hospital Personnel Office for these.)

Tutoring and organizing study sessions can also provide some extra spending money during your second year.
