State Auto Registration
As a full-time student, you are not required to change your car
registration or driver's license, so the only reason to do so is to pay lower registration fees and/or
insurance (but insurance usually depends on where the car is garaged anyway, not where it's
registered).
NH
If you would like to register your car in NH or obtain a NH driver's license, you should start at the
Town Office in the town in which you reside. Be sure to bring along proof of ownership and a
checkbook. From there you will have to go to the DMV (603) 448-5408 on Mechanic St. in
Lebanon.
VT
The DMV telephone number is (802) 828-2000. You can get a VT license at the DMV in White River
Junction on certain days of the month. Call to find out when they are open, otherwise you can go to
Montpelier (a 30 minute drive). To change registration, get a car registration sheet from the local
police department (closest one is the Hartford Police Dept. behind the VA Hospital in White River
Junction). You need to complete this and have the police verify your VIN # at the station (you must
have your title with you). If you have already paid taxes on your car in another state (e.g.. sales tax
when you bought the car) then you may be exempt from paying taxes again when you register;
otherwise, you may pay a one time fee of 5% of the value of the car.
