Food & Dining Off Campus Dining - Expensive Hanover Cafe Buon Gustaio (CBG's): Good Italian food with a rotating menu so you can return again and again to sample exciting new pasta dishes. The bar hosts Tuck's Pub Night every Thursday if you want to meet people from the other graduate schools on campus. Very pricey, but very good. This is the place to get your parents to take you when they are in town. The Daniel Webster Room, Hanover Inn: In a subdued and formal atmosphere you will find distinguished Dartmouth Alumni (e.g. C. Everett Koop) ruminating over delicious food. The only AAA Four Diamond restaurant in area if you are looking for an expensive bottle of wine. Service is relaxed, so plan to make an evening of it! There is an excellent Friday buffet lunch and Sunday brunch. Outside Hanover Lebanon Jesse's, Lebanon: Traditionally a favorite among Dartmouth students, you will seldom visit here without seeing someone you know. The combination of a fine seafood and steak menu, a lively atmosphere, a great salad bar and drinks attracts crowds on the weekends. If you don't feel like waiting to be seated, arrive early. Norwich La Poule a Dents, Norwich, Vt: Located in a renovated house that dates from 1820, this is a small intimate restaurant whose atmosphere is romantic and unpretentious. Norwich Inn, Norwich, Vt: Another New England town inn, less formal than the Hanover Inn, it is a favorite spot to bring visiting relatives. The desserts are legendary. The pub offers cheaper food and great beer. Plainfield Home Hill: Beautifully situated 15 mins South of Hanover in Plainfield. This Inn serves wonderful traditional French cuisine. Another top choice for a date or with parents. Quechee, VT Quechee Inn, Quechee, Vt: The beautifully restored 18th century home in a rustic setting is a wonderful starting point for a relaxing evening in the rolling hills of Vermont. The entrees are very good, and the atmosphere, cozy. The Parker House, Quechee, Vt: Some people may get nervous when presented with a verbally delivered menu sans price, but once over the initial shock you will have a memorable dining experience that you will want to repeat. Good service, good wine list, varied menu. Simon Pearce, Quechee, Vt: Most peoples choice as a best bet for a date or meal with your parents. Overlooking the Ottauquechee River and waterfall with an outdoor terrace from which to watch the cascades, the atmosphere alone would be worth coming for. But the food that guarantees you will return. Go for lunch on the weekend for the same food and atmosphere at a more reasonable price. Skunk Hollow, Quechee, Vt: offers a casual pub downstairs or fine dining upstairs. They often have live music. Thetford, VT Stone Soup, Thetford, Vt.: Great food in a picturesque country setting Woodstock, VT Bentley's, Woodstock, Vt: A quaint atmosphere of Victorian sofas, antique lamps and oriental rugs with a varied menu from tasty appetizers (nachos, buffalo wings) to full dinners. There is a good Sunday brunch, and dancing in the evenings. The Prince and the Pauper, Woodstock, Vt: You'll go in feeling like a prince, eat like a king, and come out a pauper - but it's worth it. This is a small, quiet restaurant, serving impossibly delicious food. The atmosphere is not at all pretentious with casual to formal attire accepted. Spooner's, Woodstock, Vt: Good competition with the Woodstock Inn, this recently renovated restaurant features good steak and seafood and one of the best Sunday brunches in the Upper Valley. Woodstock Inn, Woodstock, Vt: Yet another New England country inn but this one is a bit atypical. The Saturday evening and Sunday brunch buffets are favorites well beyond the upper valley and are therefore well attended. The food is excellent and the selection staggering at a price that won't quite break the bank. The usual a la carte menu is also exemplary and the service couldn't be better. |
