Hospice

Hospice is an opportunity for students to gain exposure to terminally ill patients and their families on a volunteer basis. Terminally ill patients are a unique patient population with a unique set of needs. Through their work, students gain a greater awareness of how to deal with the physical needs of hospice patients, but also how to confront difficult emotional and spiritual issues involved in end-of-life care. Students are able to accompany hospices nurses for home visits to hospice patients and to assist in providing basic medical care. In doing so, the student is exposed to the team-based approach to care necessary in palliative medicine, involving physicians, but also nurses, social workers, and chaplains.
