About Us

Throughout his long and distinguished career as a surgeon, educator and international health advocate, Dr. C. Everett Koop has tirelessly dedicated his life to improving the health and well-being of the global community. In 1992, the former surgeon general returned to his alma mater as a faculty member of the Dartmouth Medical School, founding the C. Everett Koop Institute.

Over the years, the Koop Institute has established several distinct groups and in 1995 created the Center for Media and Health (CMaH). The goal of the CMaH was to educate children through multimedia programs combining animated smoking prevention films and peer interaction, ultimately empowering youth to defend themselves against the onslaught of advertising and peer pressure. Smoky Lies, focuses on tobacco's manipulative advertisements geared towards children.
