Telepsychiatry
Telepsychiatry at Dartmouth-Hitchcock provides distance learning to mental health professionals, clinical consultation, and ongoing supervision of clinicians in public clinics throughout the State of New Hampshire. Each of the 10 lead community mental health centers in the state are involved in the teleconference network, as are other agencies serving children, such as Casey Family Services.
Using computers and small video camera technology, it is possible to provide cost-effective supervision and training without the needless waste of time and money necessary to attend conferences and workshops off site. This methodology increases efficiency, extends expertise, and raises the level of psychiatric care throughout the region.
All current training is focused on psychiatric care of children who have been exposed to serious emotional trauma.. Clinicians receive supervision on their own cases, and also benefit through experiences of colleagues.
Web-based training is provided for Continuing Education credits, followed by face to face in person training with expert trainers for one to two days. A center may conduct a mass training to give the basics of treatment. Then yearlong contracts for weekly supervision are established with a minimum of 40 sessions.
