Adult Residency - Rotations

Resident Rotations by Year of Training
(Each year consists of 13 four-week blocks)
Post-Graduate Year 1 (Internship)
6-7 Blocks Inpatient Psychiatry
- Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (includes 5%-10% adolescent patients)
4-5 Blocks Internal Medicine
- 2 blocks inpatient
- 1 block outpatient (option to do a pediatric developmental issues clinic)
- 1 block ED
2 Blocks Neurology
- 1 block inpatient
- 1 block consult

Post-Graduate Year 2
6 Blocks Inpatient Psychiatry
- 1-5 blocks Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (includes 5% to 10% adolescent patients)
- 2 blocks New Hampshire Hospital (includes 30%-50% adolescent patients)
- 4 blocks Veterans Administration Hospital
4 Blocks Consultation/Liaison-Crisis
(Includes 0.5 days/week of outpatient Geriatric Psychiatry clinic)
- Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center
2 Blocks Combined Consultation/Liaison (VA) and Substance Abuse (DHMC)
1 Block Research (transfer residents do this in their fourth year)
- Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center or VA
Outpatient Psychopharmacology Clinic
- 0.5 days/week for 13 blocks (either DHMC or VA)

Post-Graduate Year 3
13 Blocks Outpatient Psychiatry
- Community Psychiatry (1 day/week)
- Psychopharmacology Clinic (0.5 days/week, either DHMC or VA)
- Psychotherapy patients (psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy at either DHMC or VA)
- Outpatient Clinic Elective (Neuropsychiatry, Geropsychiatry, or Sleep Disorders, 0.5 days/week at DHMC)
- Research elective (0.5 days/week at DHMC or VA). As noted above in Post-Graduate Year 2, the 1-block Research requirement is filled in either PGY 2 or PGY 4.
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinics and seminars (1 day/week at DHMC)
Post-Graduate Year 4

13 Blocks
- Senior Resident Teacher on Inpatient Psychiatry Service (1 afternoon/week at DHMC)
- Outpatient Psychiatry: Psychopharmacology Clinic (0.5 days/week at DHMC or VA)
- Electives (residents select 2 or 3 from among the following):
- Senior Resident Team Leader on Inpatient Psychiatry Service (5 mornings/week at DHMC or VA)
- Outpatient Clinics: Geropsychiatry, HIV, Psychoendocrinology, Neuropsychiatry, Buprenorphine, Sleep Disorders (0.5 days/week at DHMC)
- Dartmouth College Student Mental Health Rotation (1 day/week at Dick's House, Dartmouth College Health Services)
- Research Project (4 days per week at DHMC or VA)
- New Hampshire Hospital Inpatient Psychiatry Senior Resident Team Leader (2-3 days/week at New Hampshire Hospital)
- Other electives are possible, depending on resident interests.
