Adult Residency
Welcome! We are excited for you as you begin or continue your professional journey after many years of school. Choosing your preferred site for residency involves so many personal factors and considerations.

The psychiatry residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is a four-year ACGME accredited program, which was founded in 1968. It has trained a generation of psychiatrists now practicing throughout the United States in the private and public sectors in both academic and nonacademic careers. The Department of Psychiatry's abiding commitment to high standards for patient care, teaching, and research has garnered the training program a national reputation for training outstanding clinicians and also researchers.
The department owes its strength in teaching in part to Dartmouth College, widely acknowledged as one of the country's very best colleges. This reputation rests on the devotion of the faculty to teaching, which uniquely among Ivy League schools is valued and rewarded. Tenure at Dartmouth is granted only to the faculty who, in addition to their publications, have amassed distinguished teaching portfolios verified by systematic and extensive input from their students.
The information provided on this page—as well as links to the specific programs we offer—should give you a strong sense of what we are about and help you evaluate our program to see if it meets your needs and expectations. We are eager to assist you in making a good match at this critical time.
Dartmouth's unique Psychiatry residency curriculum prepares trainees for the challenges of contemporary psychiatric medicine. We teach a wide variety of clinical evaluation methods and interventions. We are committed to developing new treatments through clinical research. We emphasize continuity, collaboration, and cost-effectiveness. We are here to support you in becoming a competent physician and diversified problem-solver.

Faculty work in multidisciplinary teams and are integrated with primary care at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Residents work in tandem with faculty on every service. This closeness between faculty and residents forms the core of Dartmouth education. Teaching and mentoring trainees' careers are top priorities with us.
You probably won't believe the beauty and sophistication of the Upper Valley and our facilities nor the phenomenal sense of social and professional community here, until you actually experience them firsthand. We intend for your online exploration to mirror the people and places you'll enjoy during your personal tour, if you eventually come to New Hampshire for a visit.
Now and later, ask yourself "Where else but Dartmouth... "

- Can you learn from distinguished, nationally prominent faculty who will open doors to you and for you?
- Can you learn the brain science psychiatrists need to know from faculty who still value their mission to care for the spirit as well?
- Can you join forces with research groups devoted to treating severe and persistent mental illness, post traumatic stress disorder, neuroimaging in psychiatric and neurological disorders, geriatric psychiatry, psycho-oncology, clinical trials, sleep disorders, substance abuse, and traumatic brain injury?
- Can you choose the Leadership Preventive Medicine Residency (LPMR), with its intellectual home in the The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (formerly known as CECS) and Dartmouth's Psychiatric Research Center (PRC), the world's foremost health policy and health service research organizations, respectively. The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice offers an MPH for LPMR residents.
- Can you do a residency that offers outstanding academics, live in a beautiful environment where you can leave your home and car unlocked, enjoy cultural offerings of an Ivy League school, and still hop in the car and be in Boston or on the Seacoast in two hours, Montreal in just over three, or New York City in just over four?
Feel free to call us at any time with your questions. Our Training Administrator, Jennifer Clerkin (603-650-5508), can steer you to additional resources.

Warm regards,
Ronald L. Green, MD
