Substance Abuse Treatment Scale (pdf)
Thank you for your interest in the Substance Abuse Treatment Scale (SATS), the Alcohol Use Scale (AUS), and the Drug Use Scale (DUS). The SATS, AUS, and DUS are scales rated by the clinician as a form of collateral data regarding substance use and stage of treatment. This letter was written to accompany reprints of the December 1996 JNMD article (see #1 below), which presented the SATS, because there are additional articles and resources that may be of interest to you concerning the clinician rating scales developed at the New Hampshire - Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center.

This toolkit is recommended to all potential users of the clinician rating scales. It provides detailed information on each scale and describes the kind of training that should precede its use, including vignettes for practice ratings. The Drug/Alcohol Follow-Back Calendar is also presented, as is a discussion concerning the valid assessment of drug and alcohol use, particularly in persons with severe mental illness. The toolkit comes with a DOS-compatible disk so materials can be downloaded and adapted for local use.
