Background
For over 20 years, investigators from several disciplines and departments at Dartmouth Medical School and Dartmouth College have been studying the problem of co-occurring substance use and severe mental disorders, also termed dual diagnosis. The Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center was started with this objective in 1987. Since then, Dartmouth investigators have been at the forefront of understanding the phenomenology, developing effective interventions, and disseminating evidence-based practices for persons who are affected by dual disorders. The DDDC research approach expanded in 2003 when Alan Green came to Dartmouth and added expertise on basic neurosciences. Since 2002, the DDDC's research activities have also included the development of interventions and treatment services research for adults and adolescents with co-occurring disorders in addiction treatment settings.
