Faculty Research Non-Federal (NIH or DOD) Awards 2005-2006

Ruth W. Craig, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded a one year grant (12/1/05-11/30/06) from the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The grant is entitled: Targeted Therapy of Multiple Myeloma by Splice-switching of Anti-apoptotic MCL1 to Death-inducing Forms.

Dr. Craig has also received a one year Cancer Nanotechnology award from the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. The award is entitled: Folate Receptor Targeting of Antisense MCL1 Oligonucleotide-containing Liposomes to Breast Cancer Cells.

Joyce DeLeo, Ph.D., Professor of Anesthesiology and of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been appointed the Irene Heinz Given Chair of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Dartmouth Medical School.

Dr. DeLeo has been appointed Associate Editor for the journals Pain and Spine.

Dr. DeLeo has been awarded a five year grant (3/15/06-1/31/11) from the National Institute of Drug Abuse. The grant is entitled: Alternatives to Opioids for Chronic Pain: Part IV.

Dr. DeLeo has also been awarded a two year contract (4/01/05-3/31/07) with Elan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., entitled: The Involvement of Astrocytic Glutamate Transporters in Neuropathic Pain.

James DiRenzo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded a two year grant (7/1/05-6/30/07) from The Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. The grant is entitled: Evaluation of Genetic Pathways Underlying Stem Cell Renewal as Predictors of Early Malignancy in Breast Cancer.

Dr. DiRenzo has also been awarded a Basic Clinical and Translational Research two year grant (5/01/06-4/30/08) from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The grant is entitled: Modeling Breast Cancer Initiation through Genetic Manipulation of Mammary Stem Cells. Dr. DiRenzo will work in collaboration with Michael Cole, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Alan Eastman, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been invited to serve as a member on the NIH/NCI study section, Basic Mechanisms of Cancer Therapeutics.

Joshua Hamilton, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Director of the Center for Environmental Health Sciences at Dartmouth, successfully renewed the multi-million dollar NIEHS Superfund Basic Research Project grant on toxic metals for a three year period.

Alexei Kisselev, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded a one year grant (1/01/06-12/31/06) from the International Myeloma Foundation. His grant is entitled: Targeting Different Active Sites of Proteasomes in Multiple Myeloma Cells.

David Robbins, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been asked to serve on the editorial board for the Journal of Biological Chemistry, effective January 2006.

Michael J. Spinella, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded a three year (01/01/05-12/31/07) Armstrong Foundation. The grant is entitled: Retinoid Repressed Target Genes on Chromosome 12p.

Michael B. Sporn, M.D., Oscar M. Cohn '34 Professor in Residence of Pharmacology and Toxicology and of Medicine, was awarded the Komen Foundation's 2005 Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in basic research recognizing his outstanding contributions to research which have improved the quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Co-awardee was Anita B. Robert, Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Sporn has also been awarded a one year grant (10/1/05-9/30/06) from the National Foundation for Cancer Research. The grant is entitled: Prevention of Cancer with Anti-Inflammatory Agents.

Research Associates Awards 2005-2006

Qing Feng, Ph.D., Research Associate in Pharmacology and Toxicology, received the ASPET Young Scientist Travel Award at the Experimental Biology 2006 meeting held in San Francisco, CA.

Caryl Giuliano, Ph.D., Research Associate in Pharmacology and Toxicology, received a two year fellowship award (1/02/06-12/31/07) from AICR. Her grant is entitled: Retinoic Acid Represses Genes on Chromosome 12p: Implications for Testicular Cancer Pathogenesis.

Hua Li, Ph.D., Research Associate in Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded a three year grant (3/17/05-3/16/08) from the Department of Defense. His grant is entitled: Identification of pro-differentiation p53 target genes and evaluation of expression in normal and malignant mammary gland.

Aime A. Levesque, Ph.D., Research Fellow in Pharmacology and Toxicology, has been awarded a two year fellowship (8/1/05-7/31/07) from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation (PhRMA). The fellowship is entitled: Visualization of Drug: target Interactions in Experimental Tumor Models.

Dr. Levesque also won the 2005 Cancer Mechanisms Research Program of Norris Cotton Cancer Center best paper award for her first author publication entitled: "Distinct roles for p53 transactivation and repression in preventing UCN-01-mediated abrogation of DNA damage-induced arrest at S and G2 cell cycle checkpoints," which appeared in the May 26, 2005 issue of Oncogene.
