2. FACULTY & STAFF
- Victor Ambros, gen, was among 72 new members elected to the National Academy of Sciences for "distinguished and continuing achievements in original research," announced May 1 at the Academy annual meeting.
- Constance E. Brinckerhoff, med and biochem, has been selected to serve a four-year term on the Arthritis, Connective Tissue and Skin Study Section of the NIH Center for Scientific Review, beginning July 1, based on achievement in the discipline.
- Jennifer Daley, c&fm, was recognized among the top 25 women in the health care industry by trade publication Modern Healthcare for her work as chief medical officer of Tenet Healthcare Corp.
- Elliot S. Fisher, med and c&fm, discussed geographic variations in medical practice and spending, and the potential for harm by too much medical care at the 4th annual Vermont Blueprint for Health Conference, "Beyond Chronic Care," April 20.
- Mark Israel, peds and gen, was elected to the Assoc. of American Physicians, which honored new members during the annual meeting April 13-15.
- Paul H. Kispert, surg, and two house staff, S. Theresa Lau, ob/gyn, and Kane Anderson, ortho, are recipients of the 2006-07 Alma Hass Milham Award, for those who "best exemplify human and ethical values" in the practice of medicine, and will be honored at a reception May 15.
- James Leiter, phys, discussed research on sudden infant death syndrome at the 7th annual Partners in Respiratory Care Excellence Symposium, March 15-16, hosted by Salisbury University's Health Sciences and the Respiratory Care Dept. at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Maryland.
- DMS faculty who participated in the American Assoc. for Cancer Research annual meeting, April 14-18, included: Ethan Dmitrovsky, pharm/tox and med, and David J. Robbins, pharm/tox, who were session leaders; Tim Ahles, who discussed, "Chemotherapy-related cognitive problems and possible genetic contributions," and Randolph J. Noelle, m&i, who presented: "Triggering of innate and adaptive immunity induces protective anti-tumor immunity."
3. STUDENTS
- Debraj Mukherjee, med, has been named a Sommer Scholar at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for the next academic year, where he was also awarded a Schweitzer Fellowship to develop a smoking cessation program for adolescents at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
- Sherzana Sunderji, med, was selected alternate for the AAMC Organization of Student Representatives for DMS; the primary rep is Abigail Proffer, med.
- DMS students named 2007-08 NH/VT Schweitzer Fellows and their projects are: Albie Ackil, Mascoma Clinic, outreach and operations; Jennifer Bentwood and Duncan Meiklejohn, Good Neighbor Health Clinic, nutrition; Cindy Nu Chai, DHMC, studio art classes; Nicholas Ellis and Pablo Valdes, a Manchester high school, health care professions for inner city youth; Lucinda Leung and Leslie Morris, Good Neighbor Health Clinic, mental health; Emmy Liscord and Abigail Sanders, Hartford Middle School, empowering young women.
