- NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY
Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., DHMC, hosted by Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Mark Israel, MD, director of NCCC, and Jerry Rouleau of the Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer, will kick off the celebration to honor cancer survivors, their families and friends, and to highlight cancer survivorship issues. The keynote presentation by Kevin Sharp, country music performer and cancer survivor, is at 10:30 a.m., and a panel on coping with cancer is at 2 p.m. Free and open to the public. Friday, June 28, Alumni Hall in the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College, 8 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. A forum of melanoma experts will update health care professionals on melanoma epidemiology, genetics and familial melanoma syndromes, clinical diagnosis of melanoma, pathology, surgical therapy including sentinel lymph nodes, and adjuvant therapy, and influencing children's sun exposure behavior. 4. FACULTY AND STAFF
- Angeline Andrew, PhD, pharmacology and toxicology, presented a posted titled "Hair Dye and Bladder Cancer" at the 93rd annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Francisco, April 9.
- John Baldwin, MD, dean, was named associate provost for health affairs, effective July 1, 2002. He received special commendations from the VA New England Healthcare System and the Department of Veterans Affairs for service to the White River Junction VA and Regional Office Center, its veterans and programs, May 14. He represented DMS at the fifth annual Medical School Fair at the University of California in Berkeley on April 27; at the 2001-02 Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership on Academic Medicine Program for Women on May 1-2 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; at the Twenty Second Annual Meeting of The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation in Washington, DC April 10-13, and at the 82nd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery there May 5-8.
- Aaron Barchowsky, PhD, pharmacology and toxicology, has been named to serve on the National Institutes of Health Alcohol and Toxicology Study Section, Center for Scientific Review for a four-year term beginning July 1.
- John A. Baron, MD, medicine and community and family medicine, presented "Aspirin Chemoprevention of Colorectal Adenomas" at the 93rd annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Francisco, April 9.
- Bernard Cole, MD, community and family medicine, was appointed to lead the NCCC Biostatistical Shared Resource, effective May 8.
- Diane M. Harper, MD, Community and Family Medicine, has been appointed a member of the American Cancer Society's National Gynecology Oncology Board and she will work with other board members to draft new cervical cancer screening guidelines due to be released this fall. She also presented three papers on self-sampling and one on optical detection spectroscopy at the 2002 American Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology Biennial Meeting in Orlando, Florida, March 28.
- Robert D. Harris, MD, radiology and OB/GYN, was moderator and keynote speaker at the recent American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) 102nd Annual Meeting in Atlanta, April 28-May 3. He spoke on "Fetal MRI: Great Hope or Hype" and moderated a scientific session on GU/OB/GYN imaging. He has also been named to the scientific program committee for the ARRS until 2004.
- Deborah W. Holmes, PhD, medicine, director of the Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences and Continuing Medical Education, received the "Presidential Recognition Award" of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education for mentoring her colleagues and advancing the ideals of academic CME, April 13.
- Christopher H. Lowrey, MD, medicine and pharmacology and toxicology, and member of the Cancer Mechanism Research Program spoke at the 3rd Conference on Stem Cell Gene Therapy in Rockville, Maryland, March 21-23.
- Four faculty were elected to the DMS chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society, May 9. The new members, Daniel Walsh, MD, surgery, Christopher Nice, MD, medicine, William Young, MD, obstetrics and gynecology, and Matthew Heintzelman, PhD, anatomy will be honored at a banquet June 4.
- Mark H. Reed, MD, psychiatry, received the Nancy Roeske Certificate for Excellence in Medical Student Education from the American Psychiatric Association at their annual meeting in San Francisco, May 17.
- John E. Wennberg, MD, was honored for his outstanding efforts to foster a publicly accountable health care system with a 2002 Ellwood Award by FACCT (Foundation for Accountability), May 3.
- Mark A. Israel, MD, pediatrics and genetics, presented a lecture titled, "Transgenic Animal Models for the Study of Human Brain Tumors," at the Inaugural Markell-Balkin Lecture of Neurosurgery & Neuro-oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital May 9, and presented a lecture titled, "Mouse Models of Human Cancer," at the Genetically Modified Mice in Medicine and Pathology Seminar Series at Cornell University, May 21.
- Charles R. Wira, PhD, physiology, presented a lecture titled, "Mucosal Immunity in the Human Female Reproductive Tract," at the 2nd Annual International Conference on Microbicides and AIDS held May 12-15 in Antwerp, Belgium.
5. STUDENTS
- Hussein Samji, DMS '04, one of four student members of the DMS admissions committee, represented DMS at the fifth annual Medical School Fair at the University of California in Berkeley April 27. The event was sponsored by the Pre-Medical Honor Society.
- Dartmouth medical students raised over $4,000 for Upper Valley charities in three recent events: the second-year medical school class annual Skits, a humor show of life in medical school raised $1,837 for David's House; the DMS Spring Concert showcased medical school musical talent, including the Dermatones, DMS' a cappella choir and raised $600 to benefit Hannah House; Medstock featuring blues, folk and rock and roll talent, including medical students Tony Wolf, Frank Margaron and the band Lazyeye (Mike Muese, Ian Paquette, Will Berger, Matt Crowley, and Peter Burrage) raised over $600 to benefit The Haven.
- Five DMS '03 students, Adrienne Williams, Jennifer Plant, Katherine O'Donnell, Blair Seidler and Elizabeth Bassett, were elected to the local Dartmouth chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society, May 9 and will be honored at a banquet June 4.
- The DMS Department of Community and Family Medicine announced that 13 DMS '05 students were awarded summer project stipends for preceptorship or research assistant work beginning in June through a Federal HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) Predoctoral Education grant and AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) support, for experiences associated with Family Medicine. The award recipients are: Ryan Knapp '05: preceptorship in family practice in a rural, underserved part of Maine, through the Maine SEARCH Program. Altin Pani '05: preceptorships in family practices in Littleton, NH (rural) and Elbasan, Albania (urban). Dorothy Shum '05: preceptorship in an urban family practice setting in Los Angeles, CA. Rebekah Kim '05: preceptorship at Sidney Hillman Family Practice in the lower East side of Manhattan. Benjamin Mailloux '05: preceptorship in a rural family practice in Claremont, NH. Christian Renaud '05: preceptorship/research assistantship on the Tohono O' Odham reservation near Tucson, AZ. Meighan Smith '05: preceptorship/research assistantship at the Community Health Center, Lebanon, NH. Julia Harris '05: research assistantship at Commonweal in Bolinas, CA. Justin Wheeler '05: research assistantship, using data from research work recently undertaken in India. Felicia Chu '05: preceptorship in a neighborhood health clinic in East Boston. Colin Stack '05: preceptorship in emergency medicine in Lebanon, NH and Ascutney, VT, and affiliated work with health policy legislative efforts.
