Class day
DMS celebrates Class Day 2008 on June 7, honoring medical and graduate students receiving their degrees this June. The event begins at 11 am in Leede Arena, John W. Berry Sports Center. Keynoter is global health expert and Dartmouth alumnus Dr. Stephen Atwood. Student speakers are MD candidate Andrew Saunders and PhD candidate Micah J. Benson.
Slow medicine
The elderly and their families may opt for comfort over cure for health care, eschewing some risky or costly treatments of modern medicine toward the end of life. The approach is promoted in a book by DMS geriatrician Dennis McCullough, who coined the term slow medicine. He discusses how families can coordinate a measured pace of care for aging loved ones.
Brain injury screening
To help meet the needs of retuning soldiers, Dartmouth Medical School and the Maine Army National Guard have teamed up to launch a state-of-the-art screening and integrated community-based care program for mild traumatic brain injury. The collaborative project, directed by Elizabeth Pearson, will maximize resources to identify and treat the mild traumatic injuries that are becoming common as more military personnel survive their severe wounds.
Family medicine
A leading DMS family medicine teacher has been appointed section chief for family at DHMC. The new head is Dr. Catherine F. Pipas an active and popular mentor who is recognized regionally and nationally for her contributions as a physician educator.
