Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research at Dartmouth Named

Dr. Murray Korc

Dr. Murray Korc, professor and chairman of medicine, will serve as the associate dean for clinical and translational research at Dartmouth Medical School and principal investigator coordinating Dartmouth's application for a National Institutes of Health (NIH) award, which will lead the establishment of a Center for Clinical and Translational Science at Dartmouth.

Dartmouth previously received a planning grant to gear up for an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), designed to speed bringing discoveries of the laboratory to benefit patients.

Korc's appointment was announced jointly by Dr. William R. Green, dean of Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Thomas A. Colacchio, president of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic and Nancy A. Formella, president of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital.

Dartmouth is committed to a CTSA program, which will transform the conduct of work at the medical school and medical center, according to the joint statement. The initiative will help place Dartmouth at the cutting edge of patient care, education and research, and has the support of partners at the White River Junction VA Medical Center, Dartmouth College and other affiliate organizations.

A distinguished endocrinologist, Korc is the Joseph M. Huber Professor of Medicine and a professor or pharmacology and toxicology at DMS who is recognized for his work to help understand and treat pancreatic cancer. He will continue as Department of Medicine chair at DMS and DHMC, a position he was recruited for from UC Irvine in 2003.

Dartmouth's application is a cooperative effort that will involve input from a wide range of faculty, clinicians and administrators. A clinical and translational science center will help secure the future excellence of Dartmouth contributions to medicine and health care.
