Dartmouth Medical Students "Match"

HANOVER, NH--Dartmouth Medical School graduating students joined more than 16,000 US medical school graduates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) to learn where they will continue their training as residents in U.S. teaching hospitals. This year 47 out of 49 DMS students matched to programs, while two students deferred their residencies.

Most DMS seniors learned of their match in a ceremony at noon where DMS Dean Stephen P. Spielberg, MD, PhD presented the envelopes to the students. They were among 25,246 applicants from the US and abroad who collectively matched to over 20,000 first- and second-year residency programs, the highest number in the Match's 52-year history. The NRPM is an indicator of the career interests of future physicians. Internal medicine was the most popular specialty for the second year in a row for Dartmouth students, followed closely by general surgery.

Eight students will remain in New Hampshire to train at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, seven will be in Massachusetts, five in California and three will head to New York.
