Alternative Options for Doctoral Programs
The breadth of outstanding opportunities in diverse fields is a great strength of Dartmouth, and one that the Program takes great pains to retain. While most students will follow the 2-P-2 track, we are also mindful of the need to provide flexibility for those students who are pursuing their Ph.D. outside the biological sciences, such as Chemistry, Computational Biology/Computer Science, Engineering, Evaluative Clinical Sciences, and Psychological and Brain Sciences. Individually, these programs have curricular and organizational structures that make them distinct from those in the biological sciences. Therefore students are urged to plan their course of study, with input from their
Class Program Advisor and their chosen graduate program, very soon after they have accepted a place at Dartmouth (i.e. prior to their arrival on campus). The planned course of study for these students should be submitted for approval to the Director of the M.D.-Ph.D. Program, who will consult with the appropriate graduate program, Class Program Advisor, and the student, in charting an acceptable course of study. The M.D.-Ph.D. Program will work with the non-biological graduate programs to develop formal program-specific training requirements for their M.D.-Ph.D. candidates.
