Acknowledgements
It is especially fitting that this collection includes both teen and parent perspectives. Psychologist and parent, Dr. Phyllis C. Wilson recognized the unique needs of teens with chronic health conditions. Her support led to the creation of the STAR Program in memory of her daughter, Phyllis Ruth Wilson (1935 †1973) who transitioned through adolescence and adulthood while living with a chronic health condition.
I would like to thank the following people for their collaboration and support of this project and the STAR Program:
The teens and parents who were willing to share their experiences and insights in the writing of their stories
Gary Stern and Bonnie Clancy for their enthusiastic participation in the teen discussion group
Lynette Oshinowo for co-leading the parent focus group
The physicians, pediatric nurse coordinators, nurses, Childlife staff and care managers at DHMC for their ongoing support of STAR and its activities
Cindi LaPointe and Anne Ivey for transcribing many of the stories included in this collection, and Colleen Goodrich for editorial comments
Doctors Ardis Olson and Craig Donnelly for their ongoing collaboration and support
The project teams of the Hood Center for Children and Families for their commitment to and work for children, adolescents and parents affected by chronic health conditions
The Koop Institute at Dartmouth Medical School for the production and maintenance of the Finding Our Way website
Finally, this project could not have been completed without the commitment and dedication of my co-conspirators Anne Baird, M.S.W. and Kate Creskoff, a STAR among STAR Dartmouth students.
