ArtCare Gallery, Stained Glass

Artist's Statement by Ed Suh Dartmouth '99
"Pictures are worth a thousand words." To a distracted student doodling away, a mutated turtle stretched across a bed of flowers could be a day's lecture on the principles of international trade. And yet to a patient, the turtle could be infused with a lifetime enrichment of his/her colorful philosophy, background, experiences, or favorite foods. Every image drawn and translated into a menagerie of colors had its message first encoded by an idea expressed, lessons learned, a history shared, or a random thought communicated in our conversations. Thus far, I have yet to find a turtle but what I have found instead is beautiful snapshots from each patient encounter: vivid snapshots that communicate more than words, at least more than mine could. Made from imagination and molded by expression, each singularly, individualistic snapshot radiates the colors of its inspirers. Hopefully, they will likewise brighten the thoughts and days of those whose eyes are able to drink in the animated colors. Having worked in ArtCare and the Elder Life Program for both the Koop Institute and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, I have been fortunate enough to partake in the following, and hopefully more to come, pieces...
