Selected Publications:

  • Supattapone, S., Bouzamondo, E., Ball, H. L., Wille, H., Nguyen, H. O., Cohen, F. E., DeArmond, S. J., Prusiner, S. B., and Scott, M. (2001a). A protease-resistant 61-residue prion peptide causes neurodegeneration in transgenic mice. Molecular and Cellular Biology 21, 2608-16.

  • Professional Interests:

Dr. Supattapone's laboratory is studying the molecular pathogenesis of prion diseases. Prions are unorthodox infectious agents that cause fatal, neurological diseases such as Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cows. Unlike other infectious agents, prions do not contain nucleic acids and are comprised instead of a single misfolded protein. The mechanisms by which prions replicate and kill nerve cells remain completely mysterious. This laboratory will use novel approaches, including transgene expression in cultured mammalian cells and invertebrate animals, to investigate these questions.
