Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the third annual "Dartmouth Summer Institute in Evidence-Based Psychiatry and Mental Health," August 7-9, 2008. This intensive course utilizes small groups and hands-on, case-based learning. Each small group is facilitated by a clinical psychiatrist/psychologist and a research librarian. We introduce the evidence-based process using topics in the areas of child, adolescent, adult and geriatric mental health. Our ultimate goal is for patients to benefit from the most effective services and care.
We hope you will join us this summer on the beautiful Dartmouth College campus to develop your professional skills with enthusiastic faculty and peers.

Institute Description

This is an intensive, introductory, 2.5 day course. Through discussion and hands-on learning, you'll acquire skills needed to practice evidence-based mental health. We use an active, case-based approach in a comfortable, small-group environment. A hallmark of this Institute is the low student-faculty ratio and the individual attention each participant receives.
Institute Objectives
At the conclusion of the institute, you will be able to:
- Incorporate the evidence-based process into your daily patient care and teaching.
- Create well-built, answerable clinical questions based on particular patient problems.
- Effectively search online resources to find the best scientific evidence in the mental health literature.
- Critically appraise the quality and clinical significance of the studies you identify.
- Determine if the results of a study are applicable to your individual patient or patient population.
Audience
- Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who want to learn the evidence-based process to improve the effectiveness of their clinical practice
- Especially useful for resident training directors and individual practitioners converting to evidence-based approaches
- Attendance will be limited to 32 participants to maximize individual learning
