Norman C. Payson, MD (DMS '73)

Norman Payson is active as an advisor, director and/or investor in multiple health care companies and his expertise is in health care financing, health insurance and health plans. Norman Payson retired in November of 2002 as chairman and CEO of Oxford Health Plans, Inc. Oxford Health Plans is greater New York's most prominent health plan with 1.6 million members. Prior to joining Oxford, Dr. Payson was co-founder and CEO of Healthsource, Inc., from its inception in 1985 until its sale to CIGNA Corporation in 1997. Prior to Healthsource, Dr. Payson was the CEO of a 120-physcian group, with more than 100,000 HMO members.

Dr. Payson is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his MD at Dartmouth Medical School ('73). He practiced medicine as a board certified family physician until 1982 and previously served in the Public Health Service on a Native American reservation in Arizona. Dr. Payson is an adjunct professor of community and family medicine at Dartmouth Medical School and is on the advisory council of the Health Sciences Technology Division of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School. He has served on the board of the American Association of Health Plans where he chaired its committee on Readiness (Bioterrorism) and co-chaired its committee on Medicare.
