Preventing Overdiagnosis Webinar: Why cancer is our most feared disease.
Learning objectives:
•Emphasize the importance of the psychology of risk perception for the study of the contributors to overscreening and overdiagnosis.
•Highlight specific ways risk perception contributes to the harms caused by cancer overdiagnosis and overtreatment.
•Stimulate discussion of behavioral economics-like approaches to apply the understanding of these psychological factors to shape the “choice architecture” influencing people’s decisions about screening and treatment of overdiagnosed cancer.
The talk will be presented by David Ropeik, award winning journalist, former Director of Communications for the Center for Risk Analysis at the Harvard School of Public Health, and author of Curing Cancerphobia: How Risk, Fear, and Worry Mislead Us. (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2023).
Preventing Overdiagnosis is an international organization which aims to develop, organize and communicate research about overdiagnosis and overtreatment. It is sponsored by Oxford University (UK), Wiser Healthcare (Australia), The Danish College of General Practitioners, and the Dartmouth Institute (USA).
