Geisel School of Medicine: Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations
Eric Eichler '57 Foundations in Medicine and Humanities Seminar--- Practicing with Humanity During a Mass Casualty Event:
A physician reflects on the Boston Marathon Bombing
Wednesday, November 1, 2023
6:00 to 7:15 PM Eastern
Via Zoom
Join Prof. Carpenter-Song & Dr. Mishra in a conversation with Dr. Marshal as he reflects on his experience as the senior resident in the ER at Beth Israel Deaconess on the day of the Boston Marathon bombing.
Dr. Ken Marshall was the senior resident in the emergency department at Beth Israel Deaconess on the day of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. His role included overseeing the care of every person that was treated in the emergency room during his shifts over the next three days. That experience 10 years ago continues to guide his thinking about responsibility and equity in the care he delivers today.
Dr. Marshall is an associate professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and the History and Philosophy of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He earned degrees in medicine and biomedical ethics from Georgetown University and completed residency in emergency medicine at the Harvard-Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Marshall practices emergency medicine and is the vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Kansas Health System. He teaches and publishes in emergency medicine, emergency medicine operations, and medical ethics, and has won teaching awards at Harvard/Beth Israel and the University of Kansas.
