Prevention and Health Promotion
Directors: Allen J. Dietrich, MD, and colleagues at NCCC and Epi-Bio
A significant center of activity in the Department of Community and Family concerns the research of Drs. Allen Dietrich and Diane Harper, as well as other colleagues at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC), which frequently involves collaboration with local physicians, and includes other regional and national collaborations as well. The breadth of research projects is wide ranging from cancer prevention and management techniques to detection and management of depression in a variety of primary care settings.
Goals:
In short, the goals of these projects are to find ways to
improve detection and intervention of disease using the primary care office
and community resources. Much of the research involves education of patients,
their primary care physicians and their communities, however, recent funding
has expanded studies to include support for the creation of new "tools"
including telemedicine for rural practices and less invasive or self-administered
tests for identifying cervical cancer.
