The C.E. Koop Institute at Dartmouth is housed in one of the main buildings of the Department of Community and Family Medicine. The mission of the Koop Institute at Dartmouth is to improve human health. Working cooperatively with Community and Family Medicine, as well as many other departments, the Institute designs and implements strategies to enhance the health of individuals, families, and communities. The Institute provides continuing leadership in innovative physician, patient, and public education, and in doing so, has supported several members of the Department, particularly in the area of electronic communications and tele-medicine.
In order to achieve its mission, the C.Everett Koop Institute focuses on three major areas:
- Education: Encouraging the creation and support of health and health education initiatives that are unencumbered by geographic, affiliational, or other traditional limitations
- Leadership: Provide leadership to link those people aspiring to enhance the health of individual, families and communities with appropriate resources of information and technology
- Networks: Explore how human networks can amplify the abilities and commitment of individuals dedicated to the promotion of health
The programs at the Koop Institute are ongoing efforts to explore new approaches to health improvement. The Institute accomplishes this through education, service, discussion and communication. Cooperating with other organizations working around the nation and here at Dartmouth Medical School, the Koop Institute seeks to be a force for social change.
