Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)

Mission
The FMIG's objective is to promote careers in family medicine and garner respect for our discipline among all students by increasing exposure to and understanding of family medicine, including current evidence-based knowledge; innovations in practice; opportunities for service, education, leadership and research.

DMS FMIG Goals
- Increase exposure to FM for all students
- Educate students regarding FM practices
- Emphasize the strengths and uniqueness of FM while also addressing misconceptions
- Provide intensive mentoring and advising for a select group

FMIG Board, 2008-09
Co-Chairs: Tom Frandsen '11 and Tom Hoke '11
Coordinate/facilitate meetings, organize/supervise events, maintain membership lists, act as liaison to faculty and other organizations, coordinate student rep at monthly FAME meetings, coordinate communication, monitor FMIG blitz account.
Secretary: rotating
Records and distributes meeting minutes.
NH Academy of Family Physicians Representatives: Tom Frandsen '11 and Emily Looney '11
Primary contact to the NHAFP. Attends NHAFP bi-monthly board meetings, updating NHAFP on FMIG successes and challenges and keeps FMIG up-to-date on NHAFP activities.
Community Service Coordinators: Will Boylston '11 and Sarah Dotson '11
Organizes volunteer opportunities and community service projects. Plans community outreach activities and recruits student volunteers for HeadStart health screenings, Good Neighbor Health Clinic, monthly blood pressure screenings at local supermarkets, disaster relief and rebuilding, etc.
Event Coordinators: entire board involved in event planning
Assesses student interest; plans, coordinates and implements FMIG-sponsored events and activities.
Skills Night Coordination: rotating
Coordinates lotteries for skills nights. Advertises FMIG events on campus.
Student Membership Coordinator: Hanna Surawska '11
Coordinates recruitment of student AAFP members.
Treasurer/Development: board and faculty advisors
Monitors financial resources and opportunities; pursues grant writing and other avenues for supporting FMIG activities; assists with grant writing.
Nathan Smith Society Representative: TBA
Represent undergraduate Dartmouth students' interests with respect to Family Medicine, and promotes their inclusion/input in FMIG events and projects.
