Family Medicine Clerkship

Description and Goal:
The required Family Medicine Clerkship is comprised of an 8 week block, including seven weeks at a primary precepting site, 2 additional days of presentations, and a final examination. The goals of the Family Medicine Clerkship are to understand the principles and practices common to family medicine.
Objectives:
Specific Family Practice objectives include:
- To develop competence in recognizing and managing the common "top 20" outpatient problems.
- To increase understanding of the social, emotional, and psychological factors (interpersonal, family, job, etc.) which influence the course of an illness.
- To enhance understanding of the subtleties of the doctor-patient relationship.
- To increase exposure to a diversity of practice styles, including a possible cross-cultural experience.
- To enjoy your role in our Family Practices.
Format:
Clerkships revolve primarily around assigned preceptorships with community-based family physicians in New Hampshire, Vermont and five national sites (Bethel, AK; Miami, FL; Tuba City, NM; Providence, RI; Augusta and Fairfield, ME). In addition, there are weekly seminars given by Dartmouth Medical School faculty that include a variety of relevant topics:
- Genograms and Family Systems
- Diabetes
- Complexity of Care
- GYN Procedures
- Joint Exams
- Prevention
- Communication & Professionalism
