Local Housing for Employees

Dartmouth College operates approximately 270 units of housing available to employees, composed mostly of apartments and duplexes, along with some small and large houses. Almost all of these accommodations are located within the Hanover limits. The purpose of this housing is to provide transitional accommodations for new employees coming to the College. Administrative, staff and service employees may reside in College housing for a maximum of three years while faculty members on a tenure-accruing track may stay until a tenure decision is made.

Of the approximately 125 College apartments located in Hanover, 80% are unfurnished except for stove and refrigerator. The majority are one and two bedroom units with a few three bedroom units. The furnished apartments located on West Wheelock Street include 12 efficiencies, 8 one bedrooms, and 4 two bedrooms. These apartments are furnished with bed (or convertible sofa bed), bureau, table, chairs, and area carpet as well as stove and refrigerator. Kitchenware and eating utensils are not provided except in a few apartments furnished for visiting professors. Heat, but not electricity, is included in the rent for the unfurnished and furnished apartments with a few exceptions.

Most of the 40 duplex (80 apartments) are located in the Rivercrest development complex about 1.5 miles from the center of the campus. These duplex apartments are unfurnished (except for stove and refrigerator) and have two bedrooms, a living room, a half basement, and a carport. Other larger but more expensive duplex units are located in Hanover. Most of these are two bedroom units that also include a separate dining room, a living room with fireplace, and a small basement. There are also a few three bedroom duplex units. Heat and electricity are not included in the rent for any of these duplexes.

There are approximately 45 small houses that the College rents to its employees. Most of these (31) are located in the Fletcher Circle/Chandler Drive development complex about 1.25 miles from the center of campus. A lesser number are located in the Burton Road and Austin Avenue sections of Hanover. These small houses have three bedrooms, a living room, a full basement, and (most) a carport, but do not have a separate dining room. Heat and electricity are not included in the rent.

There are 20 large houses available to employees, almost all of which are located in Hanover. These houses, in most cases, have four bedrooms, a separate dining room, 1.5 bathrooms, and a full basement and/or attic.

College rental housing is a limited supply and a waiting list is maintained by the Rental Housing Office for many of the units. Vacancies are offered on a "first-applied, first-offered" basis. Any employee who is interested in College housing must file an application with the Rental Housing Office.
