Vincent Starai (Wickner lab) and Amity Manning (Compton lab) were awarded the E. Lucile Smith Award for Excellence in Biochemistry in 2007 at the Biochemistry annual party on March 14. Vinny's selection as the postdoc winner was based on his work to resolve a controversy in the field of membrane dynamics, whch was published in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 104:13551-13558 (2007). Amity's was selected for her dedicated service to the program as well as her graduate work on the mechanisms of spindle assembly during cell division, published in Curr. Biol. 17:260-265 (2007), Mol. Biol. Cell 18:2970-2979 (2007), and in a review in Curr. Op. in Cell Biol. [epub ahead of print] (2007). Established by the Biochemistry Department in 2004, the Smith Award is given annually to the graduate student and the postdoctoral fellow who have best demonstrated scientific excellence in Biochemistry.
