Project Summary:

A. Overview: Present a brief summary of the research project in lay terms, including the following:

1) a brief summary of the project including hypothesis(es) and objectives.

2) the relevance to human or animal health or general knowledge.

3) a clear explanation of how animals will be used to achieve the project objectives.

B. Animal use alternatives: Please summarize the methods and sources used to determine that alternatives to animal usage are not available or appropriate. Alternatives are defined as new methods that refine existing tests by minimizing animal distress, reducing animal usage, or replacing whole animal tests. Federal regulation requires that considerations of alternatives to each procedure must state sources consulted, such as Biological Abstracts, TABLE OF CONTENTS Medicus, Medline, the Current Research Information Service (CRIS), and the Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC). The minimal written narrative should also include the date of the search, the years covered by the search, and the key words and/or search strategy used by the Principal Investigator. Please also include descriptions of any other methods and sources used to determine that no alternatives to animal usage are available to the procedure. The narrative should be such that the IACUC can readily assess whether the search topics were appropriate and whether the search was sufficiently thorough. Please see Animal Care and Use Program Newsletters, contact a member of the IACUC or veterinary staff or consult with Margorie Westerfield at the Dana Library if you need assistance with this question.

B. Assurances

The IACUC of this laboratory assures that it will review and monitor the listed protocol/ procedure in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, PHS Policy on Animal Welfare and applicable Dartmouth Guidelines. Specifically, the protocol review, for the aspects of the study which will be performed at the contract lab, will include consideration of:

• Justification for the use of animals, including species and number to be used;

• Procedures will avoid or minimize discomfort, distress and pain to the animals;

• Alternatives have been considered for procedures that may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress to the animals;

• Procedures which may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress will be performed using appropriate analgesics, anesthetics or tranquilizers;

• Animals that would otherwise experience severe of chronic pain or distress that cannot be relieved will be euthanized;

• Medical care for animals will be provided as necessary by a qualified veterinarian;

• Activities that involve surgery include appropriate provision for preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care and will be conducted using appropriate aseptic procedures;

• Procedures involving immunization will be conducted following the Dartmouth IACUC Guidelines for Polyclonal Antibody Production or the National Research Council Refinements of Monoclonal Antibody Production recommendations (ILAR, Vol 31(1), 1989);

• Personnel conducting procedures on the species being maintained or studied will be appropriately qualified and trained in those procedures;

• Methods of euthanasia are consistent with the recommendations of the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia.

In addition, the laboratory agrees to notify the Dartmouth IACUC promptly of any problems involving animal care and use for those animals involved in this protocol.
