Dr. John Moran DC '54, DMS '55: Supporting Excellence

Dr. John Moran

"When I was at DMS back in the 50's, it was a small two-year school with two buildings, 24 students, a small faculty, and it was actually on the verge of being discontinued," Dr. John Moran recalls.

Since Dr. Moran's DMS days, both he and his alma mater have experienced a good deal of change. Dr. Moran earned his MD from Cornell in 1957 and embarked on a forty-year career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. As for DMS, the M.D. program was reinstated in the late 1960's. The campus has grown well beyond two buildings and has a presence throughout the Medical Center, Dartmouth College, and Tuck and Thayer. The student body has grown more than threefold, and the faculty have expanded exponentially. And DMS, along with DHMC, has just launched the Transforming Medicine Campaign, the largest fundraising campaign in its history--the most recent among many dramatic departures from those days of uncertainty.

When the Fund for DMS Working Group was created for the Campaign, Dr. Moran was the logical choice to serve as chair because of his passion for DMS and long service to the School. The group is helping to lead the way in increasing unrestricted gifts, an important Campaign priority. Unrestricted gifts, such as those to the Fund for DMS, provide fiscal flexibility so that DMS can seize opportunities and respond to the demands of today's rapidly changing healthcare environment. The Fund for DMS Working Group is made up of 12 alumni from a wide range of class years as well as current DMS students. "We share a strong feeling for the school and wish to back it up with action," says Dr. Moran. Fundraising is a way to do that, he adds.

As chairman, Dr. Moran keeps in close communication with Director of Annual Giving Amy Schrom, heads working group meetings, and like the rest of the group, urges alumni to make significant donations to the Fund to help DMS reach new heights of excellence.

"It's a privilege to take part in supporting DMS, to help ensure that the excellence and growth continue," explains Dr. Moran.
