Dr. Suzanne Boulter

"At the time I went to DMS, not many women were offered positions in medical schools," recalls pediatrician Dr. Suzanne Boulter, who entered Dartmouth Medical School in the fall of 1964. As the first New Hampshire-born female student at DMS, Dr. Boulter helped pave the way for the many female medical students who have followed over the years.

The fact that DMS was short on female faculty mentors in the '60's inspired Suzanne Boulter, today a distinguished New Hampshire pediatrician and dedicated advocate for children and teens, to become a mentor herself. "I enjoy mentoring female students, especially those who are interested in primary care. I think it's a great choice for women," Dr. Boulter notes.

A preceptor for third- and fourth-year DMS students in the NH-Dartmouth Family Practice Residency Program at Concord Hospital, Dr. Boulter also mentors first- and second-year DMS students enrolled in the "On Doctoring" course, a course that provides students with early exposure to the clinical setting.

Mentoring DMS students is just one of the ways in which Dr. Boulter supports the Medical School. She also makes generous annual gifts to the Fund for DMS. "I received my MD from Harvard, but I don't have the same kind of allegiance to it," she explains, adding, "I always felt that Dartmouth gave me a great foundation that opened up a lot of doors for me."

It's her strong allegiance to DMS that inspires Suzanne Boulter to support education at DMS. She says, "I think of supporting Dartmouth as a payback for all it has given to me."
