Instructions To Applicants

This information has been designed to assist you in the preparation of your application. Please use it as a guide and to record your steps.

1. AMCAS
Dartmouth Medical School participates in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), the AMCAS Letter of Recommendation Service and the AMCAS Criminal Background Check Program. The first step in applying to Dartmouth is filing an application with AMCAS. For questions email AMCAS@AAMC.org or call (202) 828-0600. The earliest date by which applications may be filed with AMCAS for consideration for medical school entrance is June 1 of the year prior to your planned matriculation. Our institutional deadline for filing with AMCAS is November 1, though we recommend that you file the AMCAS application as early as possible to guarantee that you have sufficient time to complete subsequent steps in the process. If you will not be taking the MCAT until September, you are likewise urged to file the AMCAS application as early as possible (before you receive your scores report). AMCAS will automatically forward your MCAT results. Transcripts for all academic work should be sent to AMCAS as directed in the AMCAS instructions.

2. Secondary Application
Once AMCAS notifies our office of your application, we will provide access to the secondary application form, requesting information supplementary to that recorded by AMCAS. For those who plan to enter DMS in 2010, the secondary application's deadline is January 4, 2010. All application materials must be received by January 4, 2010. To ensure fairness to all applicants, we are strict about deadlines. A completed application consists of:

  • The AMCAS application.
  • The secondary application. A nonrefundable fee of $85. Applicants with substantial financial need who have received an AMCAS fee waiver will also receive a fee waiver from Dartmouth.
  • A composite recommendation from your school's premedical committee or a packet of at least two individual letters from your school. If your school has no
  • premedical committee, two individual letters are required. If you are in graduate school, a letter from your thesis advisor is expected as one of the two required letters. To expedite the process, candidates are urged to have letters prepared as early in the process as possible and to include their social security numbers and/or AMCAS ID numbers on the letters. All letters must be received through AMCAS using one of their acceptable forms of receipt.
  • D. Additional application materials are required of all candidates for the M.D.-Ph.D. and M.D.-M.B.A. joint-degree programs. Detailed information about the application procedures for the joint-degree programs is available with the secondary application.

3. Interview Notification
Applications are reviewed from September through April. You will be notified by email when a decision is reached regarding an interview. Invitations to interview are issued throughout the September-to-April interview season at the discretion of the Committee. Approximately 800 individuals are invited for interviews in Hanover. The Committee considers it beneficial both for the student and for the School to conduct all interviews in Hanover.

4. Final Notification
Review of files by the Admissions Committee continues after the interview. Notification of acceptance or denial is issued as soon as the decision is known, but usually no earlier than January 1. Interviewed applicants placed on the waiting list are notified of this status. The waiting list is reviewed periodically.

Historically, a number of applicants initially placed on the waiting list are offered places.

5. Withdrawals
Should you wish to withdraw your application, written notification is required.

6. Transfer Admissions
We are seldom able to accommodate transfer students. Transfer applications will only be considered for entry into the second- or third-year classes, and the availability of transfer spots is predicated upon the withdrawal or leave-taking of currently enrolled students. Preference for these places is given to candidates from US medical schools who have a compelling need to transfer to Dartmouth. Students from foreign medical schools can be considered for places only in Year Two. To apply for transfer application, students must be in good academic and conduct standing at their former institution and eligible for promotion. We are unable to entertain transfer applications from students of dentistry or osteopathic, chiropractic, or veterinary medicine. By late February, a decision is made as to whether transfer places will be available. The deadline for transfer applications is usually in mid-April. Decisions are made during the late spring.
