Preclinical Enrichment Electives

Year I & II students may choose an enrichment elective (or possibly two) during their fall and winter terms at DMS. These are short courses or directed projects, offered free of charge, that build on students' interests and expand their knowledge in some way. For ten years we have been able to offer diverse and interesting choices, and we attribute the quality of our menus to both faculty and student initiative. Some of the best courses have been the result of combining student ideas and faculty know-how; others have simply reflected areas of faculty interest not fully tapped in the formal curriculum.

Examples of previous enrichment electives include:
Wilderness Medicine
Evidence-Based Medicine
Neurosurgery Exposure
Palliative Care
Book Club: Diversity Issues
Disaster Medicine
Medical Care and the Corporation
Medical Spanish
Oral Presentation (Clinical)

Extended Electives Listing

Electives in the first two years are not offered for credit. Students may, however, receive mention of one elective on their transcripts in each term if they have met the established criteria for successful completion. If they have not met the criteria, they do not receive the notation. Requirements are always specified in the various course descriptions.

Kalindi Trietley, Director of Learning and Disability Services, is also the director of the Enrichment Elective Program.
