Dartmouth Medical School (pdf) 1.8mb

Dartmouth Medical School is a beacon of discovery and learning, linking the march of biomedical knowledge to the development of new approaches to improve health and save lives. The nation's fourth oldest medical school, it melds the resources of a world-class medical center with the breadth of an Ivy League institution and builds on more than two centuries of scholarship to shape exceptional leaders with the skills and confidence to excel.

Innovation and Discovery

Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) promotes discovery and dissemination of knowledge to harness advances in biomedical research and health care assessment to benefit society and cure disease. Investigators collaborate across the departments of Dartmouth Medical School and Dartmouth College to understand basic mechanisms and translate their insights into new treatments and technologies.

An array of multidisciplinary programs and centers at the interface of science and medicine builds bridges for cutting edge research that leads to novel therapies and their scientific, outcomes-based evaluation. DMS is on the front lines with notable contributions in such areas as cancer, cell and molecular biology, genetics, infectious diseases, immunology, bioethics, neurosciences, public health and medical outcomes.

Learning

DMS features a collegial environment that nurtures ingenuity, enriches opportunities for intellectual growth and promotes the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Up-to-date instructional initiatives attract a mosaic of strong candidates for medical, doctoral and master's degrees, as well as dual degrees through partnerships, such as the MD/PhD with Dartmouth College and the MD/MBA with the Tuck School of Business.

A curriculum that integrates basic biomedical science and clinical experience for scientifically enriched, compassionate care prepares aspiring physicians for the full spectrum of medical practice. Graduate life sciences programs span departments and disciplines to enhance collaborative exchanges among students, fellows and faculty. Evaluative clinical sciences programs highlight policy planning, decision making and medical outcomes that enhance public health. DMS graduates have the grounding and motivation to become among the best and brightest in their professions.

Leadership

DMS cultivates dedicated and successful professionals with the vision to shape solutions that will transform science and medicine. The momentum of their accomplishments propels DMS to prominence in paving the way for promising therapies, developing new models of biomedical education and forging solutions to assure high caliber care that is patient centered and cost effective.

Faculty, drawn from throughout New England and across the country, are dynamic leaders and role models who hold pivotal positions in their fields and whose scholarship is recognized among their peers nationally and internationally. Their commitment to excellence ensures that superb education, groundbreaking research and conscientious service will continue to be the top priorities at DMS.

Service and Community

DMS is part of a diverse and vibrant community, connecting the educational mission of Dartmouth College with the clinical mission of Dartmouth- Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). Many DMS physicians care for patients through DHMC, which along with the medical school, includes Dartmouth- Hitchcock Clinic, Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and the White River Junction, Vermont, Veterans Affairs Medical Center. DHMC links to a network of hospitals and health care organizations in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts.

In the spirit of founder Nathan Smith, DMS promotes partnerships for volunteerism that set faculty, students and staff on the road for a lifetime of service, locally and globally. The Dartmouth primary care cooperative provides a framework for community-based clinicians to conduct research and improve primary care services. Dartmouth Community Medical School offers programs that bring the excitement of medical science to the public.
